Review on Modern Times

Modern times is an exceptional movie which provides more of a message than some movies with much more dialogue. The movie touches topics regarding police brutality and their abuse of power, a strong communist community, and the unfair treatment of the average worker. Modern Times accurately depicts the living conditions and terrible experiences people had to live through during the Great Depression and provides insight to the many flaws and the lack of government help for people going through tough times and unemployment. The character of the gamin presents an example of how the depression left many kids in the streets to fend for themselves and ultimately led them to unlawful things in order to survive (breaking into a department store to find a place to sleep and attempting to steal a loaf of bread to eat). Charlie Chaplin's character serves to demonstrate how "the machine" can eat up its workers and make them go mad, which literally happens to the character.

  1. Good! I'm glad the message of the movie was so clear to you! I'm also glad that you noticed that the gamin has an important role in showing what many young people had to go through.
